Return On Investment (ROI)

Los Monitos Language Center is a for-profit company and understands that other companies must evaluate the need for language instruction, cultural education, translation and interpreting from the standpoint of Return on Investment.

That’s why Los Monitos’ corporate programs fall into meeting ONE of FOUR RETURNS.

1. Productivity – When companies have either clients or workers who speak English as a second language or do not speak English at all, there is no question that time is literally “lost in translation” and possible work output. In addition, the time and money that is spent trying to convey information, re-explaining, rectifying issues due to a lack of understanding causes an additional opportunity cost... What could everyone have been doing instead?

2. Safety – Beyond productivity, some critical information, if not clearly communicated, could lead to loss of life or serious injury. OSHA mandates that workers who do not speak English as a first language MUST receive safety training in THEIR native tongue. Safety issues can literally cause financial distress on a company that disregards or neglects their responsibility to ensure worker safety.

3. Liability – Beyond safety, companies have an obligation to its workers to make sure that they understand the policies and procedures in place at the company. If non-native English speakers are shown to be have been treated differently than other workers, legal or regulatory problems could arise. Workers who are involved in the supply chain or delivery of a product or service could also inadvertently cause quality issues with customers.

4. Affinity Programs – Los Monitos partners with organizations to provide personal and professional development through language learning or cultural education for its employees. These programs can be structured as a benefit or retention device for an organization’s workforce. When Los Monitos Language Center becomes the language and cultural “go-to resource”, we bring many advantages and benefits over and above instructional, interpreting and translation.

Read CDC Report on Work-Related Injury Deaths Among Hispanics

“In-depth investigations … by CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and state public health and labor agencies … suggested characteristics that contributed to higher numbers of work-related injury deaths among Hispanic workers, including inadequate knowledge and control of recognized safety hazards and inadequate training and supervision of workers, often exacerbated by different languages and literacy levels of workers…

Preventing work-related injury deaths among Hispanics will require…researchers and health communication professionals to develop additional materials that are culturally appropriate and effective for workers who speak different languages and have varying levels of literacy.

Liability:

According to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is unlawful to discriminate against any employee or applicant because of the individual's national origin. No one can be denied equal employment opportunity because of birthplace, ancestry, culture, linguistic characteristics common to a specific ethnic group, or accent.

Example violations include: Language Accent (An employer may not base a decision on an employee's foreign accent unless the accent materially interferes with job performance), English fluency (A fluency requirement is only permissible if required for the effective performance of the position for which it is imposed), and English-only rules (English-only rules must be adopted for nondiscriminatory reasons. An English-only rule may be used if it is needed to promote the safe or efficient operation of the employer's business.).

This means that many employers will employ and have the responsibility to train, communicate and oversee workers who cannot speak, understand or write proficient English.

Productivity:

The Economics concept of opportunity cost suggests that each time one participates in one activity there is an opportunity of loss (or cost) because one could not participate in another activity at that same time. Needlessly repeating instructions or tasks due to non-comprehension is a perfect example of opportunity cost.

In addition, research has shown causal relationships between communication and performance or productivity. One such study found, “Participants in communication networks were found to be higher performers than isolates, with the difference being the most striking for the expertise network (as opposed to the authority and social networks).

According to the findings of this study, a communication isolate is associated with an increased use of telephone and written communication, as well as a tendency to withhold information from other employees. In contrast, communication participation is associated with perceptions of increased informational flow, greater redundancy, and more overall communication satisfaction.

The results of the study demonstrate that participants are more satisfied with their jobs, more committed to the organizations by which they are employed, and higher performers, while isolates tend to be associated with both negative affective and performance characteristics, suggesting that if individual employees are not well integrated into organizational communication networks, it can be most dysfunctional.” -Communication and Productivity in Organizations, Public Productivity Review, Vol. 6, No. 4 (Dec., 1982), p. 282.

Most of the research focuses on the English language scenarios. By extension, lack of sufficient communication in a multi-lingual and multi-cultural work environment has exponential implications.
